Our company started as ‘Law Essays and Tutors UK’ early in 2003, in Camberwell, London.
There in Camberwell, a young BVC graduate, Barclay Littlewood, was struggling to find a job and was working as a law tutor for various tuition companies, to save up for further legal education.
After a while, some of those tuition companies started to ask him to write essays for their clients, under the guise of ‘legal research’. He was astonished at the high prices they charged their customers and the low quality of work he saw from other writers.
Barclay saw a market with a poor reputation that charged extortionate prices to desperate students, offering little in return. There was clearly an opportunity to make a difference.
His idea was to sell 2:1 and 1st class essays written by a trained Barrister. Although many had no confidence in his idea, he had set up his first website within a few weeks and was running the business from his bedroom. Everything was ready to launch but would it be a success?
Well, within the first week of trading Barclay had recovered his start up costs and made £1,000 - not a bad start! Barclay wrote all the essays at that time and answered the phones. Soon there were too many essays for him to do alone so he hired extra writers, cheekily using university job boards to recruit!
There was clearly a demand for this service and soon Barclay decided to expand into other subject areas, opening a new website Degree Essays UK. He took on our first full time member of staff in August 2003, and incorporated the Company as Academic Answers Ltd in November of the same year.
From those small beginnings, we’ve expanded into a team of over 30 employees and over 4,000 writers, to become the nation’s favourite and most trusted essay company.
